Grooming
At this time of year it is all important to keep your horse dry, warm and clean. Keep the coat in tip top condition means, feeding correctly, well fitting rugs and regular grooming. I try to stick to a routine that works, it takes about 15 minutes per day and it works a treat for my 2 horses, they are very different in their needs as one is a Thoroughbred and the other a heavyweight cob. So to start grooming the TB (Thoroughbred) bring him in from the field remove all boots and put to one side for hosing. Wash legs if necessary, check for any cuts and grazes and remove all mud. He suffers from mud fever in winter, so dry legs off as well as I can and if necessary apply what preventative barrier cream. Then remove rug, body brush in one hand rubber or metal curry comb ( I prefer my old fashioned Jockey’s choice curry comb as it removes all the dirt from the body brush more effectively). I then start on his neck, only do this if the mud is dry and flick rather than drag through the coat (rubber curry comb is best for this, never the metal one). TB’s skin is fine as a rule so not too much brushing in one area, remove mud then brush with body brush and clean brush with metal curry comb Lastly take out worst of mud from mane and tail, again don’t drag the brush through the mane or tail just short strokes starting from the bottom. Pop a rug back on and in the stable for the night. Now to the heavyweight cob who usually brings most of the mud in with him!! His winter hobby is to roll. Do as above but really dry his legs of well we use kitchen roll. Then to get the clumps of mud off him we use a plastic curry comb, run it all over his body the same way the coat grows. Then finish off his body with the body brush and metal curry comb. His mane and tail get quite knotty so we use a detangler then unknot the worst with our fingers then use his mane and tail comb. His legs are brushed with a dandy brush in the mornings when they have dried thoroughly. Tom can suffer with mites so we have to be careful we put on him. A job well done.
