Ok, so you have decided to buy a rug for your horse, here are a few tips to make sure you get the right rug for your horse and its purpose. Measure your horse properly (please see our ‘measure for rugs’ guide) Look for a rug which is at least 600 denier, (denier is the gauge of material used on the outer of the rug, so the higher the denier the thicker the density, improving the rugs defences against rain) The correct weight for the time of year, remember you can’t rug a Cob the same as you rug a Thoroughbred, take the horses age/health into account. Cotton liner or nylon liner, obviously cotton will be warmer but nylon will stop some rubbing on the shoulders, so personal preference. All rugs should have shoulder pleats to improve comfort when the horse is moving, look for rugs that have robust stitching at the area as this is always one of the first places the stitching will rot/give way. No seams along the back as this will allow rain to penetrate through. Cross surcingles, leg straps and front straps should be adjustable and robust. A fluorescent strip is handy on a turnout rug, especially if you’re bringing horses in, in the dark. Tail flap is important as this will keep the tail and bottom area warmer, rain will run off the tail flap. Without one the rain would run onto the horse’s tail and cause discomfort and even a chill. Finally if you decide to purchase a neck cover make sure you purchase a rug with neck cover clips.
